Is AI Taking Over Pinterest? What You Need To Know.
Bonus Material: Pinterest Masterclass For Organic Pinterest Traffic
This blog post is for any female small business owner who uses (or wants to use) Pinterest to drive organic traffic to their business, but is worried about the impact of AI on Pinterest success.
Introduction
With the explosion of AI into the online space in the past couple of years, many Pinterest users are understandably wondering about the impact of AI and AI generated content on the platform.
Many questions are being asked about AI and Pinterest, including:-
- Should I be using AI to generate my Pinterest content?
- Will using AI impact my success on Pinterest?
- If I don’t use AI on Pinterest will my account suffer?
- Is there still space for me as a content creator to not use AI on Pinterest?
- Is Pinterest allowing mass pinning of AI content?
- Should I take a training course that shows how to create Pinterest content en masse using AI-powered tools?
- Will using AI-generated content mean an increase in conversion rates and clickthrough rates on my Pinterest account?
- Is it safe to use AI-generated pin images?
I’ll address those questions and the broader impact of AI on Pinterest below.
The Future Of Pinterest And AI
There’s no doubt about the fact that AI is indeed going to be part of Pinterest moving forwards, in the same way that AI will be part of all core online spaces (for example, you can already find Grok inside X – that’s their AI system that can help with content creation and more inside the platform).
Many Pinterest creators are concerned about the overall impact of AI on the platform, and whether they will see negative outcomes on their own accounts if they do, or indeed don’t embrace AI for Pinterest.
Pinterest has a high volume of creative business owners who love to use the platform to pin their own pin designs.
Many feel reluctant to move away from using original content, and start using AI generated content for the platform. Is this going to impact your success if you are one of these creators?
Other Pinterest users want to jump on board the opportunities AI provides, but are cautious about doing so, wondering if this approach will have negative consequences for their accounts.
Right now we’re in the early years of AI, and, as such, it’s hard to predict the longer-term impact of AI on any platform, including social media platforms and Pinterest.
However, we’re already seeing a flood of AI-generated content inside Pinterest, and we need to understand what this means for us.
It’s important to stay abreast of the changes AI is bringing to the online space, and how AI-related content may impact Pinterest now, and moving foward.
Answering Common Questions
Should You Be Using AI To Generate Your Pinterest Content?
There are already accounts spamming Pinterest with hundreds of AI generated pins every day.
Some niches are seeing this happen more than others.
Home decor, for example has seen an overwhelming volume of AI generated pins flood the platform.
When it comes to creating pins for your Pinterest account strategy, if you want to use AI to generate your Pinterest content, fine – but proceed with caution.
Pinterest is already blocking and closing accounts that are overly-spamming the platform with poorly generated AI content.
That’s not to say you can’t use AI as part of your Pinterest strategy, and in fact there are Pinterest account holders doing so, and with great success.
I would say that right now, if you wish to use AI for Pinterest, use it as your assistant, rather than using AI to replace you.
You can certainly generate some amazing looking pin images using AI, and we’re seeing many AI generated images on the platform.
You can use AI to help you write great headlines and captions, but I would always stress that the end result should be your own copy, rather than purely AI based copy.
Part of the reason for this is to protect your account, because right now we don’t have absolute clarity about what Pinterest will and won’t accept with AI generated content.
But additionally, AI will not necessarily be able to include good, relevant keywords in your Pinterest titles and captions.
You should, therefore, still undertake your own research, to identify suitable keywords you can use as part of your pin titles and captions, to help Pinterest index those pins appropriately in search.
Will Using AI Impact Your Success On Pinterest?
Only if you start to spam Pinterest with poor AI generated content.
There are plenty of Pinterest account holders who aren’t using AI for Pinterest at all (most of the ladies in my community right now), and their accounts are not seeing any negative impact as a result.
So I can assure you, if you don’t want to use AI at the moment – that’s fine, as long as you’re using great Pinterest strategy on the platform.
When it comes to using AI, I have tested AI myself, asking it to write my pin captions for a good few months (but adding my on slant/keywords to those captions), and I didn’t see any negative impact on my Pinterest account or metrics.
There are creators using AI to generate all of their content, from pin image to headline to captions.
Those having success doing this are big Pinterest creators (with teams that help them), and they’ve trained AI (and their teams), to understand the type of images/headlines/captions to produce, that are great for Pinterest. As a result they’re not seeing any negative outcome using AI for Pinterest in this way at the moment.
As already stated, if you want to use AI as part of your Pinterest strategy, proceed with caution. Don’t over spam.
If You Don’t Use AI On Your Account Will It Suffer?
Many creators are concerned they’ll get left behind if they don’t use AI for Pinterest.
I don’t believe this will be the case. It certainly isn’t right now.
However, it’s always necessary to stay abreast of changes anywhere in the online space, and to be willing to pivot as and when necessary.
Will we see the day where Pinterest success only comes from the use of AI generated content? I personally don’t think so. But in saying that I, like you, do not have a crystal ball. I can only keep an eye on things and report as I see changes take place.
Right now I continue to create all of my own content for Pinterest without the use of AI.
Ladies in my community are doing the same, and many big and successful Pinterest creators are also doing the same.
Should circumstances change, and it becomes an absolute necessity to use AI as part of our Pinterest strategy, I will embrace that, and will update this post to reflect that.
Is There Still Space For Content Creators To Not Use AI On Pinterest?
Absolutely, and with great organic success too.
I show you how you can use great Pinterest strategy to grow organically on the platform inside my Pinterest Masterclass. You can also grab my free Pinterest Guide sharing 50 of the best Pinterest tips for your strategy on the platform.
Is Pinterest Allowing Mass Pinning Of AI Content?
That does seem to be happening right now, but Pinterest is taking action to block and remove accounts that are doing this in a spammy way.
Spammy way means poorly AI generated images/headlines/captions that then don’t lead to human urls (eg; human written blog posts).
There are niches that are more impacted than others. Home decor/inspo for example is seeing a large volume of AI generated content, because this type of content is pretty easy to generate with AI.
Creative niches like crochet, knitting, bullet journaling etc., are much safer right now, as AI does not yet have capacity, for example, to create patterns or journal pages that pins can be linked to.
Should You Take A Training Course Showing How To Use AI For Pinterest?
Not unless you specifically want to use AI to help with your Pinterest strategy.
If you do want to use AI and to learn how to use AI well – be warned. There are so called ‘Pinterest experts’ out there who are promoting AI training for Pinterest, showing you how to generate hundreds and hundreds of pins daily for Pinterest.
There’s a big risk that if you follow those trainings, you may have your Pinterest account blocked or removed. Be careful who you buy into.
Right now ladies in my community (who have followed my Pinterest Masterclass), are pinning between 1-5 new pins a day on Pinterest, and they ARE seeing the results from this strategy in terms of growth on the platform, and organic outbound clicks to their businesses.
You do not need to drop hundreds of pins a day to be successful on Pinterest.
You do need consistency and good Pinterest strategy.
Will Using AI-Generated Content Mean An Increase In Conversion Rates And Clickthroughs On Your Pinterest Account?
Not necessarily.
If you’re pinning for topics that have poor Pinterest user intent, or you’re mass pinning without good strategy to move Pinterest users from pins to human created spaces (blogs, podcasts, Youtube videos, lead magnets, products and services), AI is unlikely to help your overall growth on the platform.
When you use Pinterest the right way, fundamental to your success will be the ability to identify and pin about topics that people are in the platform searching for.
I cover how and why you need to do this inside my Pinterest Masterclass.
Is It Safe To Use AI-Generated Pin Images?
Yes but proceed with caution. The only space I have tested this in is ChatGPT, and the quality of the images were mostly poor.
You need to make sure your pins are visually appealing, of high quality, are relevant the place you’re driving those pins to (the urls attached to the pins), and you should have some text overlays on those pins that are a ‘hook’, that are clear and easy to read, to encourage people to click through the pin.
There will be AI platforms that allow you to generate good quality pins. I don’t know them myself, because I continue to create all of my pins in Canva. But a Google search is likely to show you some results you can check out.
Has AI Ruined Pinterest?
There are people already saying that AI has ruined Pinterest. I disagree.
There’s still a wide open space for genuine creators to use the platform, to create their own non-generated AI content for Pinterest, and still achieve amazing results.
Ladies in my community are averaging anywhere between 150 and 30,000 organic outbound clicks per month in Pinterest, dependent on the length of time they’ve been pinning consistently on the platform. They’re creating original content for Pinterest, including original pin designs. They are not using AI.
There are always going to be people who want to cut corners to try to get ahead, and who will try to spam Pinterest with AI just to get clicks. They’re unlikely to be successful longer term.
The Future Of Pinterest And AI
There’s no doubt that AI is here to stay, and that AI will be part of Pinterest.
In fact Pinterest as a company are introducing Pinterest AI tools to the platform – specifically to help advertisers create smarter, more efficient and more powerful adverts. You can read more about that here.
The CEO of Pinterest has also apparently said that they’re using Pinterest AI to generate positivity on the platform, helping to diversify users’ search results. You can read more about that in a Yahoo finance article here, and you may see this happen when you go to the platform and an AI generated image asking you about the body shape you most associate with pops up on your screen.
We know AI is already part of Pinterest, both from a user perspective, and from a Pinterest company perspective.
At this moment in time you have choices with your Pinterest marketing strategy.
- To remain an original creator and not use AI at all (right now there does not seem to be any negative impact in doing this).
- To remain an original creator, but keep an eye on the progress of AI on Pinterest, ready to embrace changes if necessary (in my opinion this is the best option right now).
- To use AI to help you generate some of your content, but make the end result your work (I have tried this, and found I spent more time crafting my pin content with AI, than when making my content fully my own).
- To fully embrace AI and start to use it as a core part of your Pinterest strategy (as mentioned earlier there are creators already doing this).
Conclusion
We’re in new territory with AI and Pinterest.
The long-term goal with your Pinterest strategy is first not to panic at the thought of AI, but to keep an eye on the progress of AI inside Pinterest. Be ready and willing to pivot at any time in the future if needed.
In the meantime, continue to create great content for good Pinterest user intent. Have a pinning strategy that helps you get some fantastic results from Pinterest organically over time. You will still be able to grow on the platform this way.
